The wet and windy climate of Norway servers as a pretext for recovering, in the singular style of the house in Bryne, the nostalgia of the nest, the protective maternal shell. Some architects seek fusion, an identification with the landscape, as in the Baiao house in Portugal. Others prefer to oppose themselves forcefully to the external world, either in order to put nature in order, as in the Daro house in Switzerland, or to mitigate the disorder of other men, as in the concrete shell of the lwai house in Kyoto. The Lee in Tokyo, so silent, so extremely ignorant of the environment, is a true metaphor of blindness. On the other hand, the Gradow Residence and the Hight Residence seem to be a metaphor of Exhibition. The Japanese design chooses rigour, formal discretion. It reflects the isolation and the insecurity of our society, but gives a universal image of tranquillity and peace. The ostentatious American works exude joy, freedom, opulence. An endless number of special effects reveal their characters as unique pieces, made to measure for a particular client.
